Coatings for Interior Woods - Polycoat/Lamination - Hi Gloss, Wear Resistant, Water Resistant finishes using Paraffinated Polyester

Teak Veneer coated with Parafinated Clear Polyester.
To get a high gloss, water and wear resistant finish for your interior woods, look no further than Paraffinated Polyester. Paraffinated Polyester popularly known as Polycoat/Lamination is available in transparent and opaque finishes.

The clear finish is truly high gloss and extremely clear (100% colourless), making the wood grains really stand out, thus enhancing the beauty of the wood.
The opaque finish gives unmatched gloss. The scratch resistance and gloss give this system an edge above the rest.

Materials Required

. Spray Gun and compressor.
. Rubbing compound.
. Orbital Buffing machine and Wool Pad.
. NC Thinner for cleaning.

Application

. Sand the wood surface using 80-100 grit aloxite dry sanding paper. (For Veneers, use 120-150 grit papers.)
. Stir the two parts of the Epoxy Isolant first in their individual containers and then mix the two together in an empty container. For a clear finish, apply Epoxy Isolant base by wiping with a soft muslin cloth on to the entire wood surface. For opaque finishes, apply Epoxy Isolant base by spray (Nozzle 1.5mm, 28-30 PSI).
. Allow the base to dry. Drying time of about 2-3 hours.
. The top coat is prepared for spray by mixing the polyester base, accelerator and hardner in the ratio of 100:2:2. Add the entire quantity of the cobalt accelerator (blue) to the base in the given ratio. The hardner is added only when the material is about to be sprayed. For proportioning appropriate measurement cups and syringes are recommended. The proportion must be maintained meticulously. Keep the spray nozzle width at about 2.5-3mm at 28-30 PSI.
. Pour the prepared material into the gun cup.
. Spray 8 to 10 coats of the topcoat in wet on wet condition with 5 minute intervals between coats.
. Wash the spray gun thoroughly and immediately after use using an NC thinner.
. Allow the topcoat to cure for 24 to 36 hrs to attain full hardness.
. Sand the paraffin using no-fill paper of grits 220, 320 and 400 to remove the paraffin coat entirely and get an even surface.
. Now wet sand the topcoat progressively with grits 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 wet emery papers to remove all scratches and imperfections.
. The thus prepared surface should now be buffed using a rubbing compound and a wool pad mounted on an orbital buffing machine. The RPM of the orbital buffing machine must be low (below 1000) to get a high gloss.

Your furniture and doors now stand a class apart!!

Why use Paraffinated Polyester ?
. Hardest coating available for thickness > 1mm.
. Excellent Gloss and Refraction.
. Long gloss retention.
. Scratch, heat, stain and water resistant.

Repairing a Damaged Concrete Slab - Spalling

Concrete spalling occurs mainly due to 2 reasons:

1. Carbonation. Iron/steel rods corrode due to carbonation (penetration of gases such as sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide etc) and increase in volume leading to cracks in concrete and ultimately spalling.
2. Corrosion of rods due to moisture penetration into concrete. Porous concrete/lack of water tightness.

Repairs can be carried out as follows.

Materials Required

. Cement
. Concrete aggregates such as sand and jelly.

Application

. Hack the surface to obtain a sound concrete surface.
. Remove all debris.
. With a rust removing agent clean the iron/steel rebars.
. Prepare a mix/bond slurry by mixing Latex Bonding Agent : Water : Cement in the ratio 1:4:8 by weight.
. Apply over the surface to be repaired using a hard broom or brush.
. Prepare a concrete mix with the Latex Bonding Agent as an admixture in the concentration of 5-10% by weight.
. While the bond slurry is still in the wet condition, apply the concrete mix using a trowel.
. Plaster over the concrete to get an even surface.

Voila... repaired concrete!

How to protect and finish Interior and Exterior Woods with PU Coatings

Polyurethane(PU) is an excellent choice when you want to protect expensive Teak, Walnut, Wenge or other exotic woods from the elements. It has good UV resistance and excellent sealing properties against water, moisture and humidity. PU retains it finish over prolonged exposures to UV. PU Matt and Glossy finishes for wood.
Let us see how to apply PU coatings to wood.

African Wenge treated with PU Sealer and PU Glossy top coat.

Materials Required

. 2 Part Solvent Based PU Sealer.
. 2 Part Solvent Based PU Top coat - Matt or Glossy.
. Wood stains, if required.
. PU thinner.
. Compressor for spray.
. Paint Gun. (250ml or 500ml Cup is sufficient)
. Dry Sanding Aloxite Paper 80, 120, 180
. Wet Sanding Paper 320, 600,  800, 1000
. Cotton Waste.
. Filter Cloth.
. Masking Tape.
. Face Mask to prevent inhalation of spray.
. Gloves and eye glasses.

Application

. Prepare the wood by dry sanding with emery grit 80 to smooth the grains and undulations on the surface. Sanding should be done along the grain.
. Once major imperfections are removed, dry sand with emery grit 120 to get a smoother finish.
. Switch on the compressor to get the required PSI. (Here is an excellent article on how to spray paint using a paint gun and a compressor). Connect the spray gun to the compressor.
. Wipe clean the surface to be sprayed using a dry cotton cloth.
. The Sealer can be tinted or transparent depending on the desired final finish.

. Pre-preparation For Porous woods

. Mix the Sealer base and hardner in the given proportion without adding thinner. (All Mixes must be consumed within the prescribed pot life)
. With a muslin/cotton cloth apply sealer mix along the grain on to the entire surface maintaining uniform thickness.
. After the sealer has completely cured and hardened, sand the flat surfaces with 180 grit free cut/ open cut emery using an emery trowel. For uneven, round, carved etc surfaces, 3M hand pads/scotch brite hand pads equivalent to 180 grit can be used. All excess sealer must be sanded and removed completely to get a smooth uniform surface. Wipe the thus surface clean.
. The rest of the procedure is the same as for regular woods.

. For Regular woods

. Mix Sealer base and hardner along with 10% - 15% thinner. Pour mix into the spray gun.
. Spray the sealer onto the surface.
. Clean the spray gun.
. Wait for sealer to cure and harden.
. Sand with emery/hand pad grit 600. Wipe clean.
. Additional coats of sealer can be applied for a smoother finish.
. Mix Top coat (Matt or Glossy or Mix a of the two) base and hardner in the given proportion along with 10% - 15% thinner. Pour mix into the spray gun.
. Spray mix onto the entire surface.
. Wait for top coat to cure and harden.
. Sand with emery/hand pad grit 800. Wipe clean.
. Spray a second coat of the top coat.
. Wait for top coat to cure and harden.
. In case of gloss finish, additional top coats can be added by sanding with 1000 grit emery between coats.
. Gloss top coats can be further buffed using rubbing compounds to get a high gloss finish.

Notes

. If the wood is previously coated, remove the coating by scraping and a paint remover. Ensure the paint remover has completely evaporated before coating.
. Ensure exterior woods are coated from all sides.

A Tough and beautiful finish is thus achieved ... and the wood grains stand out!!!

How to Waterproof and Paint Exterior Walls

Tired of applying coat after coat of white cement on rain lashed walls and leakage still returns? Applied the most expensive decorative exterior paint and the leakage is still there? Contractor making a profit but building still not waterproof? Well the problem lies in the solution. The wrong solution.

The common misconception among untrained contractors is that white cement is waterproof, which is not true. White cement being a form of cement, absorbs water and does not form a barrier against it, thus is not waterproof.
Also decorative paints that are commonly used on exterior walls are for mainly one purpose ... decoration, not waterproofing.

The proper solution is as follows.

Materials Required

. Acrylic polymer for repairs
. White cement (But why??, didn't you just say its not waterproof? Ans: It is used as a filler along with an acrylic repair polymer.)
. Acrylic Waterproof Coatings for Exterior Walls
. For new cement surfaces, Primer for  acrylic waterproof top coat.
. A good quality, large paint brush (100mm, 4")

Application

. Wash and saturate surface with water. All work should be taken up when surface is dry to touch (about 45mins later).
. Check for cracks and damage. Where there is cobweb cracking (cracks < 1mm), a mixture of 1part acrylic polymer for repairs : 2 part white cement by weight is prepared and applied by brush over the surface. The thus formed coating must be water cured twice a day for 2 days.
. Cracks > 1mm can be filled using an acrylic crack filler.
. Construction joints such joints between structural members and brick walls can be filled using a polyurethane construction sealant.
. Apply a coat of cement primer (as recommended by Acrylic waterproof top coat's product data sheet) diluted to the correct consistency on the entire surface using a paint brush.
. After about 4-5hours, apply the first coat of the acrylic top coat for walls by roller/brush; usually undiluted.
. 5-6hours later a second coat in the direction perpendicular to the first coat is applied.

As can be seen, the above system is exactly the same as that followed when painting exterior walls with decorative paints. Thus adding no extra labour costs.

Advantages

. This system serves 3 purposes : 1. prolongs the life of the masonry (giving the property both life and value) 2. Gives an excellent finish 3. can be tinted to a shade of your choice; can be used as a decorative paint.
. The system is cost effective : can be done in the same cost of labour as decorative paints
. The dry film thickness (DFT) of the system is usually > 130microns and gives excellent crack bridging.
. A heavy duty water barrier is formed keeping water out.
. Acrylic top coats give excellent anti-fungal and anti-algal performance.

So when you think of painting your exteriors, this system is an excellent option.

How to fill plaster cracks using an acrylic crack filler

Materials Required

. Putty blades/knifes

Application

. Identify cracks that are > 1mm and < 6mm.
. Check for soundness of the plaster around the crack. Any loose plaster must be chipped off using a chisel or a stone cutting machine.
. Wire brush the crack and wash off dust and debris with a jet of water.
. Prepare a primer for the crack by mixing the acrylic crack filler paste with water to obtain a paint like consistency. Apply the primer using a paint brush along the cracks and to about 25mm either side of the crack.
. While the primer is still tacky, fill the crack with the crack filler paste using a putty knife in direction perpendicular to the crack. The paste must be spread to about 25mm either side of the crack.
. Allow to cure for 24hrs.
. A second coat of crack filler can be applied to level the crack with the surrounding plaster.

How to Waterproof your damaged Terrace/Roof - Rescreeding / Re-laying maddi

Severe leaks in your roof slab can cause premature aging of the slab concrete. This causes

. weakening of the slab
. concrete breaking off, exposing the steel reinforcement bars (spalling)
. in milder cases, paint and putty flaking

not only giving your property a bad appearance but also diminishing its value and life.

Screed de-bonding is one of the major causes of terrace leakage. Redoing the concrete screed on the terrace can help prevent the leakage. Proper bonding can be achieved by the following system.

Materials Required

. Ordinary portland cement (OPC)
. Aggregates for screeding
. Waterproofing admixture
. Mason's tool kit

Application

. Check the screed on the terrace for hollow spots using the wooden handle of a hammer.
. Chip off the loose material to obtain a sound surface with straight edges and repair using a polymer modified repair mortar..
. If there is excessive hollowness, chip off the complete screed using a hammer and chisel and remove the debris.
. With clean water, wash off all excess/loose dirt and debris and saturate the mother slab.
. On the side walls, mark the slope that has to be created in the screed, required for water run-off.
. Create the bond slurry using the latex/poly-carboxyl polymer, water and OPC usually in the proportion of 1 polymer : 4 water : 6-8 cement by weight.
. Apply the bond slurry using a large size brush or a hard broom, covering the entire surface evenly. Also apply the bond slurry to a height of about 100mm on the parapet walls.
. Prepare the screed concrete using OPC, aggregates and water containing a waterproofing admixture in the desired proportion (Refer to manufacturer's data sheet for the quantity of waterproofing admixture required).
. In the wet on wet condition (while the bond slurry is still wet), lay the screed concrete over the surface using a trowel to level the surface to obtain a minimum thickness of 50mm. Particular care must be taken to create slopes for water run-off while laying the screed concrete.
. Cure the thus formed cement surface using water.
. Once cured, prime the wall and floor joints using a mixture of 1 latex polymer :1 cement. Form angle fillets of 40mm x 40mm along the wall and floor joints using a polymer modified repair mortar while the primer is still tacky (wet on wet).

A sound screed gives a waterproof terrace.

How To Waterproof Your Underground(Sump) / Concrete Water Tank

Waterproofing your concrete water tanks can be done in 2 steps.
. During construction - Integral water proofing
. After Construction - Waterproof barrier cum Hygiene coatings

For Integral Waterproofing

Waterproof liquids / additives are available to make concrete dense and less porous, reducing water seepage. These liquids reduce the amount of water required to be added to concrete. Less water means dense concrete and lesser pores.

Materials Required

. Cement, Jelly, Sand, Water (Concrete Mix)

Application

. Measure water required for the concrete mix according to the waterproof liquid's  manufacturer's data sheets.
The liquid is added to the measured water in the dosage (per bag of cement) as prescribed by the.manufacturer's data sheets.
. The above mixture is then added to the concrete mix.
. Pour concrete and allow for curing.

Waterproof concrete is ready... or is it really?

 Waterproof barrier cum Hygiene coating

The above does make the concrete dense but not 100% water proof. Hence, a waterproof barrier coating is recommended.

Materials Required

. Acrylic polymer bound cementitious waterproof coating material - Forms a waterproof, flexible coating.
. 2 component food-grade Epoxy coating material - Forms a hygiene coat; Prevents fungal formation and improves water-tightness.
. Brush

Application

. Saturate the cured cement surface with water.
. Liquid component of the acrylic polymer bound cementitious waterproof coating material is measured out into a bucket.
. The powder (cementitious) component is added slowly while stirring continuously to the liquid in the required proportion (usually 1 liquid : 2 powder by weight or as prescribed in the manufacturer's datasheet). Stirring is very important to avoid formation of lumps.
. Brush apply the mixture on the substrate.
. Allow the coating to dry.
. Cure the coating with water.
. Once cured, saturate the coating with water.
. Stir the contents of the 2 part epoxy first in their individual containers to a uniform consistency and then mix the the 2 components in the required proportion (usually the 2 components are available in pre-measured packs or as prescribed in the manufacturer's datasheet). Addition of water as per the datasheet.
. Apply the first coat of the epoxy system with a brush.
. Allow the coating to air-cure for about 6-8hours.
. Brush apply the second coat in a direction perpendicular to the direction of application of the first coat.
. Allow the coating to air-cure and harden.

The above process takes about 48 hours and water can be filled in the tank after about another 48 hours.

How to seal and waterproof construction joints - using polyurethane (PU) sealant and bituminus waterproof tape

Construction Joints are different from plaster cracks in many ways.

. Joints are usually 2mm to 19mm wide, plaster cracks are usually 0.5-2mm wide.
. Joints usually have movements in them such as structural movements, movement due to unequal expansion of adjoining substrates etc. Plaster cracks are usually static.
. Joints can be sealed using permanently flexible compounds, whereas plaster cracks can be filled using materials that become rigid upon curing.

As a result, joints have to be treated differently from cracks. Here is one of the methods that can be used to seal and waterproof joints.

Materials Required

. Polyurethane sealant
. 100mm wide Bituminous Tape
. Mason's Kit

Application

. Clean out the joints using a wire brush and remove the dust and debris using a dusting brush.
. Using a gun-grade Polyurethane(PU) Sealant, slowly squeeze out the sealant and move along the joint forming a continuous bead. In case of a break in the bead, overlap the new bead with the old for about an inch and continue. Allow the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer's datasheet.
. After the sealant has completely cured, check and fill any gaps.
. Paste the bituminous sealing tape along the joint sealed using the PU sealant, using a rubber roller giving good pressure. In case a rubber roller is not available, a bundle of cotton waste can also be used to apply pressure. At joints in the tape, ensure overlap of about 50mm.
. If required, an acrylic topcoat can be applied on the tape by first priming the surface using a latex based primer. The topcoat must be spread about 50mm either side of the tape.

No more leaky joints!

Practical Scenarios

The above method can be used to seal joints such as

. Parapet wall and terrace slab joints.
. Joints between walls of adjoining buildings.
 . Skylight joints
 . Window-wall joints etc.

. The cement surfaces must be cleaned free of loose materials, oils and other contaminants.
. Check the screed for hollow spots using the wooden handle of a hammer.
. Any sections found to be hollow (screed de-bonded from the mother slab) must be repaired using a polymer modified mortar.
. All surface cracks must be checked for integrity. Any loose cracks must be chipped and repaired using a polymer modified mortar. Cracks that are not loose and not greater than 2mm can be filled using a crack filler.
. Rinse the surface with clean water to remove any dirt.
. Saturate the cement surface with water. Saturation prevents the coatings from curing prematurely due to absorption of water.

Application

. Apply a coat of primer which penetrates the porous surface and seals the pores and allows for good bonding of the protective top coat to the cement substrate. Priming can be achieved using specialized primers or using latex polymers diluted to the specified consistency.
. In the case of latex primers, while the primer is still tacky (after approximately 30-45 mins, depending on the surface temperature) apply the 1st coat of an acrylic top coat. For other primers follow the manufacturer's instructions.
. After the 1st coat has cured for about 3-4 hours, apply the 2nd coat in a direction perpendicular to the direction of application of the first coat. In case of large roof spans, a glass fiber mesh can be embedded between the 1st and 2nd coats by loosely laying the fiber mesh on the cured 1st coat and then applying the 2nd coat on top of it.
. A 3rd and final coat can be applied after about 6-8 hours.

The above system can be left exposed and no screeding is required for low - medium foot traffic. The above system has a life expectancy of about 5-10 years depending on the foot traffic.
